Ribbed Baby Bonnet 0-3 Months {Free Crochet Pattern}

A knit look crochet bonnet pattern for the modern baby that is vintage at heart. Keep this design simple for baby boys, or pair this bonnet with a fabric or crochet flower to create a sweet and simple bonnet that's perfect for baby girls.

Size:
0-3 Months - Fits head circumference 12-14 inches.

Stitch Knowledge:  adjustable loop, ch (chain), sl st (slip stitch), sc (single crochet), hdc (half double crochet), RibHDC (ribbed half double crochet), BLO (back loop only)

Materials List:
DK Weight Cotton Yarn
(Cascade Ultra Pima Yarn for the sample.)
Stitch Marker
Scissors and Tapestry Needle

Special Stitches: 

Note: Find step-by-step instructions for the RibHDC stitch at Little Monkeys Crochet.

RibHDC: Yarn over, insert hook into the loop directly below the front loop of the stitch. Yarn over, pull through all 3 loops on the hook. 

0-3 Months

Note: Rounds 1-6 are worked in continuous spiral rounds. Do not join and do not turn. Mark the first stitch of each round with a removable stitch marker. Move the stitch marker up as each round is completed.

Starting out: Make an adjustable loop.

Rnd 1: Ch 2 (not a counted stitch). Work 10 hdc into the loop. (10)
Rnd 2: Work 2 hdc into each stitch around. (20)
Rnd 3: {Work 1 hdc into next stitch, 2 hdc in next.} Repeat between {} around. (30)
Rnd 4: {Work 1 hdc into each of the next 2 stitches, 2 hdc in next.} Repeat between {} around. (40)
Rnd 5: {Work 1 hdc into each of the next 3 stitches, 2 hdc in next.} Repeat between {} around. (50)
Rnd 6: {Work 1 hdc into each of the next 4 stitches, 2 hdc in next.} Repeat between {} around, replace last hdc with sc. Sl st in next stitch to join. (60)

Gauge: Laying flat rounds 1-6 measure approximately 4.25 inches.

Note: Pattern is now worked back and forth in rows instead of rounds.

Row 7: Ch 2 (not a counted stitch). Work hdc in BLO of same stitch as join. Into each of the next 54 stitches continue working 1 hdc in BLO. (55)
Row 8: Ch 2 (not a counted stitch), turn. Work RibHDC in each stitch across. (55)
Row 9: Ch 2 (not a counted stitch), turn. Work hdc in BLO of each stitch across. (55)
Row 10-17: Alternate working Row 8 and Row 9, ending with Row 9.

Note: Laying flat width of the bonnet will measure approximately 5 inches.

Finishing: Ch 61, sl st into 2nd ch from hook. Continue working sl st into each ch stitch across (60 sl st). Rotate bonnet so you are working across the side, work 11 sc evenly spaced across (11 sc). Work 1 sc into each sc across the back of the bonnet (5 sc). Work 11 sc evenly spaced across the other side of bonnet (11 sc). Ch 61, sl st into 2nd ch from hook. Continue working sl st into each ch stitch across (60 sl st). Rotate bonnet so you are working across the front brim, work sl st into each hdc across (55 sl st). Sl st in corner to join. Tie off. Weave in ends.
